EPIC Online Parent Meet Up
Tuesday 27 May, Term 2 Session 3
THEME: Youth Mental Health Discussion
A regular place to meet and gain strategies, knowledge and connection.
Facilitated by parents of young people with lived experience of caring for a young person in crisis. Created for parents and carers of young people who are facing challenges.
The theme, Youth Mental Health Discussion has “Discussion” being the main focus. Tonight we will trail a different format to enable us to share and connect more.
Our combined "well of wisdom" is the most powerful asset we can share, and it enables us to support each other. The questions we will discuss are from the Connecting the Dots Documentary facilitator guide below.
The purpose of the discussion is to provide positive steps forward. Please take a look and consider your experiences and responses. It's important we are objective and kind!! Most of us have had adverse experiences with supports which are real, if you'd like to talk about them, please reach out to the EPIC crew.
Questions to ponder:
What are some ways that parents can overcome their own stigma towards mental health to help youth?
What do you think are the early signs of mental ill-health or psychosocial challenges that parents should recognise in order to help their children as soon as possible?
What are the barriers in accessing resources or services?
What elements of family, community or society are contributing to young people feeling disengaged?
What elements of family, community or society do you think can help to make it better?
Do you think that young people in the community have sufficient emotional support?
What are the key sources of young people’s emotional support in the community?
What role do parents and caregivers have in supporting young people?
What are the challenges parents and caregivers face in doing this?
What resources do you feel parents and caregivers need?
If there is one thing you feel you could do to make a difference, what would that be?
Please suggest other questions. This is more a prompt to get the thought process going (and laziness on my behalf using existing resources).
If you would like to contribute and would prefer to remain anonymous, please reply to this email with your thoughts and I will talk about them on your behalf.
